Breaking: Thai soldier takes hostages at shopping mall after killing at least 20

Update: 1:45 p.m. EST – the number of people killed by a Thai soldier at a military base and then a shopping mall is now 20. This figure may rise as the soldier is still holed up in the shopping mall.

Multiple reports indicate the soldier killed at least 3 higher ranking military members at the base before stealing a vehicle and continuing the rampage at the nearby shopping mall.

This is a breaking story, we will update it as more information becomes available.

Bangkok (dpa) – A Thai soldier went on a shooting spree on Saturday, killing at least 14 people before holing up in a shopping mall.

Military commander Lieutenant General Thanya Kiatsarn said 14 people were confirmed dead and that security forces are trying to apprehend the gunman who has reportedly taken hostages inside the building.

“As for the motive to the incident, we have to wait for officials to catch him and interrogate him first,” Thanya said in the statement.

The rampage was centred on a major shopping mall around 260 kilometres north-east of Bangkok, in Nakhon Ratchasima province, but reports say it may have started elsewhere.

Thanya said the man killed several other fellow soldiers of higher rank during his shooting spree, but did not say where those fatalities took place.

There were also several other retired soldiers and active soldiers who were injured.

Citizens and police officers were also shot dead, local media reported.

Thai news outlet Matichon published posts from social media users inside the mall who said they were hiding from continuous rounds of gunfire.
