The leader of ISIS, Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi was killed in a “successful” U.S. Special Operations counterterrorism mission in northwest Syria Thursday, the White House reports.

Al-Qurayshi was allegedly wearing a suicide vest that detonated during the raid, sources told Fox News.

Pentagon press secretary John Kirby said there were no U.S. casualties.

In a statement released by the White House, Biden said the raid took place “at my direction,” and he thanked the “bravery” of U.S. forces.

“Last night at my direction, U.S. military forces in the northwest Syria successfully undertook a counterterrorism operation to protect the American people and our Allies, and make the world a safer place.”

Biden is scheduled to make a speech about the raid Thursday morning.
