A tornado ripped through the neighboring Tennesee town to the Army’s Fort Campbell and severely affected military families living off post.
Clarksville was hit hardest by the tornado and the local news reported on one military families remarkable story of survival.
“A place that we’ve lived a little over a year, completely gone in a matter of minutes,” said Dale Guimond, who is a soldier stationed at Fort Campbell.
According to Guimond’s Facebook he has been in the Army for seven years and serves as an Avenger System Repairer.
Guimond told News Channel 5, their home’s roof was ripped off while they took cover in the bathroom.
He believes they were in the direct path of the tornado.
“This is where we were, right here in this tub,’ Guimond said.
“Got the kids in the tub, made sure they were covered in blankets and I acted as a human shield along with my wife,” he said. “One of the neighbors down the street as soon as he saw our roof missing, he ran over, kicked down the door to check on us, and helped us carry the kids out of the house and into theirs for safety.”
Their home ended up being a total loss from the roof loss and the water that entered the home after but Guimond says he’s already been in touch with their realtor to find a replacement home.
Guimond says he was fortunate for the generosity of the community following the disaster.
While shopping at Walmart for replacement clothes for their children, a man in the checkout line purchased their items for them after hearing about their tragic loss.
“It’s good to find the good in humanity after a disaster like this,” Guimond told News Channel 5.
