UFO enthusiasts finally have another story to add to their “Area 51” files.

Speaking for the first time about what he saw at the scene of the world’s most famous flying saucer case, an unnamed witness has come forward, after 44 years, describing a “mass UFO sighting in the desert near Roswell.”

According to the an exclusive report from the Daily Express, he reported the claim to MUFON — the world’s officially-recognized body for recording sightings. MUFON has 47 other Roswell sightings in its database, dating from 1953 to 2012.

In his report, the US Army veteran describes what he and 500 other military personnel saw in the New Mexico desert in July 1971. He did not explain why he waited this long  to break his silence but added: “This event will remain etched in my mind until I pass.”

He also said the mysterious five hour-long event will “haunt him until he dies.”

Stationed at Fort Bliss, Texas, at the time of the incident, the man says he and the others in his unit were often sent on “military maneuvers” in the New Mexico desert, west of Roswell. The veteran says he and more than 500 other soldiers, were part of the Chaparral-Vulcan Air Defense unit,  who were trained to recognize “all foreign and domestic aircraft” flying at that time.

On that fateful night, he says, his unit had a “nocturnal double UFO encounter”.

“The first object was spotted coming from the north and stopped…another object approached from the west….for the next five hours, the objects made erratic moves remaining in a close area.”

The witness says the “circular objects” remained visible until the sun became too bright. At daylight when they were ordered to another location in the desert to eat, “The whole unit was discussing the UFOs,” he says.

MUFON is reportedly investigating the case and has listed it as “unresolved”.

Roswell has been at the heart of the UFO scene since 1947, when the military released a statement saying it had found the remains of a crashed flying saucer in the nearby desert. The statement was retracted the next day when officials said it was just a damaged USAF air balloon.

However, witnesses later came forward claiming that inside the crashed craft they saw alien bodies — which were taken to the top-secret Area 51 military base in Nevada — along with the wreckage.
