Army recruiter arrested in connection to gun store robbery

A suspect has been apprehended in the robbery of a firearms store in Texas- and he’s a US Army Recruiter.

According to San Angelo Now, 30-year-old US Army Recruiter SSG Michael O. Newsom is was arrested by SAPD last weekend in connection with the August 2nd robbery of the ODIN Firearms.

Battalion Commander Lieutenant Colonel Adam Kimmich of the Army Recruitment 5th Recruiting Brigade, Newsome is not currently recruiting while the case is under investigation.

“We’re aware of the allegations,” Kimmich said on Tuesday. “The matter is under investigation by local law enforcement.”

Newsome’s arrest is currently being investigated by the Army as well.

“We take all allegations seriously.” Kimmich added.

According to records from the Tom Green County Jail, Newsome was arrested on the 7th of August for possession of a controlled substance Penalty Group 1 greater than one gram. However, according to records at the Tom Green County Courthouse, Newsome was booked August 12th and released on $10,000 bond.

SAPD and Army CID searched Newsome’s home in San Angelo, turning up handguns, ammunition, military clothing, recorded surveillance video and black shoes.

In addition to the guns and uniforms, small jewelry bags used to sell narcotics were found, as well as a small sample of methamphetamine.

Burglary suspect Joe Garrett Stanley was found at the scene and taken into custody. No firearms from the ODIN robbery were found.

Joe Stanley’s 27-year-old brother, Michael Stanley, was charged with state jail felony burglary of a building, theft of a firearm, unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon, unlawful possession metal body armor by felon and state jail felony possession of a controlled substance Penalty Group 1.

Two acquaintances of the Stanley brothers -Newsome and 28-year-old Levi Garrett Rosser- were also arrested in connection to the case. Rosser was charged with third degree felony unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon.

Several units, including the ATF, are conducting an investigation. Newsome is currently en-route to Fort Hood.
