Army medic dies during training competition in South Korea

Staff Sgt. Kelly L. Richards, a 32-year-old Army medic from Grayling, Mich. died Wednesday while competing for a Expert Field Medical Badge in South Korea, according to the Associated Press.

Richards, a 14-year veteran of the Army who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, was attempting to earn the badge through a competition that includes physical fitness trials and tests of medical knowledge and soldiers’ skills, according to the Army.

The competition took place at an Army base in South Korea located roughly 40 miles north of Seoul. Details on Richards’ death were not released, but the Army did not say his death was not suspicious. Richards was posted to the 3rd Brigade Combat team at Fort Carson in Colorado.
