Army Golden Knight Soldier dies in skydiving accident

Aug. 17–WARRENSBURG — The nine-member Golden Knights’ Black Demonstration Team lost a member, Sgt. First Class , Cincinnati, Ohio, in a skydiving mishap at the Chicago Air and Water Show on Sunday.

Reports state Hood collided with a Navy skydiving team member, who suffered a broken leg, and then Hood stuck and bounced off a 20-story building before landing near North Lake Shore Drive.

Hood had been known to perform a “stack stunt,” also called “canopy relative work,” such as the one used at Wings Over Whiteman on June 13 and 14 by the Golden Knights’ Gold Demonstration Team.

Based on Army information, Hood enlisted in the Army more than 10 years ago and attended basic and advanced training at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. From there he took the basic airborne course at Fort Benning and went on to serve five tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Hood’s accomplishments: two Bronze Stars, two Meritorious Service Medals, five Army Commendation Medals, five Army Achievement Medals, Master Parachutist Badge, Pathfinder Badge, Air Assault Badge and the Combat Action Badge.

Hood began jumping in 2010 and logged more than 500 free fall jumps and 75 military static line jumps.

In his free time, Hood enjoyed watching sports, riding motorcycles, skydiving and spending time with the family

The Golden Knights’ Gold Demonstration Team is scheduled to perform Friday and Saturday at the Kansas City Air Show.
