American paratrooper barely survives after chute fails to open during jump in Italy

An American paratrooper in Italy had a close call, descending towards the earth for nearly fifteen seconds before his reserve parachute opened at the last possible moment.

The video was originally posted to TikTok, but eventually found its way to the U.S. Army WTF! Moments social media page.

Those who served in the 173rd Airborne Brigade will recognize the location of Juliet Drop Zone in Pordenone, Italy, with the ant hill-like mountains in the distance.

The jumper in question was exiting a C-130 Hercules when his main T-11 chute failed, causing the Soldier to fall for some distance.

Fortunately for the paratrooper, this jump was not conducted at combat altitude, and he had a little extra time to open his T-11 reserve.

Onlookers appeared relieved as the trooper’s canopy opened just in time, seconds before becoming a “lawn dart.”

The date of the video is unknown, but it is currently making its rounds online.
