Airman reported dead at natural spring in Florida

An Airman assigned to Moody Air Force Base has been reported dead after visiting one of the most popular natural springs in Florida.

According to base officials, the unnamed airman was off duty at Ginnie Springs when he died. The Spring is located on private property in Gilchrist County and is about two hours from Moody Air Force base.

The park is a popular destination for camping, canoeing, tubing, and snorkeling.  Its close proximity to Gainesville, Florida makes it a popular place for University of Florida students on the weekend.

The name of the airman will not be released until twenty four hours after the next of kin has been notified -standard procedure for all of the military.

“It is a great loss to us all when we lose a member of our Air Force family. Team Moody and I extend our deepest condolences and prayers to family and friends during this difficult time,” said Col. Thomas Kunkel, 23d Wing commander.
