Airman confirmed dead after shooting


An Airman from Whiteman Air Force Base tragically succumbed to gunshot wounds suffered from a shooting Saturday around 4:40 a.m.

According to CBS St. Louis, Senior Airman John J. Bottom, 22, died at a Kansas City hospital on Sunday after being taken there after a shooting. Bottom was shot in Warrensburg at an off-base residence.

The shooting is currently being investigated by the Johnson County Sheriff’s Department with help from Whiteman officials.

The suspect in the shooting, a friend of Bottom’s is in police custody, according to Fox News.

A Whiteman media representative has stated the shooting was likely an accident.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the airman, the airman’s family and all others impacted by this event,” Brig. Gen. Glen VanHerck, 509th Bomb Wing Commander, said in a statement Saturday.

The name of the suspect has not yet been released.
