Airman “awake and alert” one week after attempted murder-suicide

Some hopeful news this morning, one week after a deadly domestic dispute involving a military couple in Grovetown, Georgia.

The active-duty airman involved in an attempted murder-suicide is reportedly “awake, alert and talking to law enforcement (officers).”

Gretchen Buehler is recovering at Augusta University Medical Center where it appears her condition has been upgraded.

When three officers with Grovetown Public Safety Dept arrived at her home, outside Fort Gordon, last Monday- they heard Gretchen crying for help. She was lying on the floor next to the front door and her husband was just five feet away from her.

26-year-old Christopher  Buehler was pronounced dead at the scene – with a single gunshot wound to the head. Police say he shot his wife several times in the chest before turning the gun on himself.

Residents in the Northrop Place community say they never noticed any problems at the house until recently, when Christopher moved in.  That’s when it seemed things started to change with Gretchen’s behavior, one neighbor told WRDW.

The couple had apparently been seeking help with marriage counseling through the military.

Police are hoping to find out a lot more in the coming days, as Gretchen’s condition hopefully continues to improve.
