Air Force identifies airman killed after being run over by bus

The Air Force has identified the airman who was killed after being struck by a bus early Monday morning near Vandenberg Air Force Base.

Tyler M. Leidholdt, 24, was identified yesterday as an Airman 1st Class assigned to the 30th Security Forces Squadron.

He was found was lying in the right lane of southbound Highway 1 just south of Timber Lane around 5:30 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.

Manuel Ortiz Jr. of Santa Maria was driving a 2017 Gillig Santa Maria Transit bus southbound in the right lane at about 60 mph when he was unable to avoid Leidholdt directly in his path, the CHP said.

Ortiz said he was unable to avoid running over Leidholdt, who was pronounced dead at the scene, because he was lying in the road.

Air Force officials say he had been at Vanderberg since May and had been in the Air Force for a year and a half.
