A North Carolina-based soldier was found dead in his barracks room at Fort Bragg on Friday, dying just over a year after enlisting.

A wheeled vehicle mechanic assigned to 1-319 Airborne Field Artillery Regiment, 3nd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, 24-year-old PFC Justin Kriska was found dead in his barracks room right before the weekend.

A native of Saint Louis, Missouri, Kriska had only joined the Army in May of 2017 and was relatively new to his unit.

“Our heartfelt condolences and sympathy go out to his family and friends,” Kriska’s commanding officer LTC Jeffrey Munn said in a news release. “Please respect the family as they grieve for their loved one.”

According to an Air Force press release, an investigation has been opened despite no suspicion of foul play.

Prior to joining the US Army, Kriska was a Firefighter/EMT with the St.Louis Fire Department, having obtained his EMT-Intermediate certification through St.Louis Community College.
