Istanbul, May 7 (EFE).- At least 48 members of the Islamic State were killed in airstrikes by the U.S.-led international coalition in northern Syria, Istanbul-based broadcaster NTV reported Saturday, citing a statement from Turkey’s military command.
According to the statement, F-16 and A-10 warplanes carried out three attacks against IS positions to the northeast of Aleppo, the only piece of Syrian territory bordering Turkey still under the control of the jihadist group.
The operation was part of a mission to support moderate rebel militias fighting the IS in the area, the statement said.
Meanwhile, a statement issued by Turkey’s armed forces high command said Saturday that Turkish border patrols had shot dead five foreign jihadists who tried on Friday to enter Turkey illegally from Syria. EFE
