101st Airborne Division soldiers boarding planes, headed to the border

Soldiers from the 101st Airborne Division departed from Fort Campbell in support of Operation Faithful Patriot on Wednesday.

Operation Faithful Patriot was the name given to the Department of Defense support to U.S. Customs and Border Protection at the southwest border.  The current National Guard mission at the border operates under the name “Operation Guardian Support.”

The Department of Defense assures the public that this is nothing new, stating that “border security is an issue of national security” and the “DOD has a long history of supporting the Department of Homeland Security and CBP in their mission to secure the U.S. border.”

The 101st Airborne Division has not offered any details about their mission but released the following statement:

“As directed by the Department of Defense through Army headquarters, the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) is deploying Soldiers, equipment and resources to assist Department of Homeland Security along the southwest border.

Military personnel will provide a range of support including planning assistance, engineering support, and logistics and transportation support.

U.S. Northern Command will be in the lead for the duration of the operation and is in support of Customs and Border Protection.”
